The Daniel G. Weisenbach Environmental Stewardship Award is named after one of the country's truest, innovative leaders in environmental awareness and recycled products, and a dear friend to many within the PROP organization. Dan's commitment to recycling, ready laugh and sense of wonder were admired by all. We are so proud to be able to carry on Dan's legacy and honor his memory with this award.

1.     AWARD Information

The Daniel G. Weisenbach Environmental Stewardship Award is named after one the country’s truest, innovative leaders in environmental awareness and recycled products.  Beginning with Weisenbach Recycled Products, which Dan began with his parents in 1981 at the ripe age of 19, he was a tireless leader not only in Pennsylvania and Ohio, but all over the country.  His commitment to recycling, ready laugh and sense of wonder were admired by all. 

 2.     Get Recognized, Get Inspired!

Become a part of an elite, statewide network of trendsetters in the fields of recycling, composting and sustainability!  The 2018 winner was honored at the Award Ceremony on Thursday, July 26 2018, during PROP’s Annual Recycling & Organics Conference, July 25 – 27, 2018.

The winner and runners-up will be posted on the PROP website, and will be given a press release suitable for placement in their local community and various industry publications.


Award-winning projects or initiatives can include but are not limited to:

  • Implementing innovative approaches and technologies
  • Advancing sustainable practices and generating economic growth
  • Harnessing the power of unique partnerships
  • Achieving extraordinary outcomes
  • Establishing effective residential or business education
  • Display exceptional leadership
  • Inspiring others to undertake like-minded projects

Award Examples (applications can fit into these areas, but do not need to)

Outstanding Media Coverage An individual or media outlet that in the last year (January 1 – December 31, 2017) has worked to cover recycling stories and/or promote recycling programs in Pennsylvania through community outreach. Who was the audience for the story and how was it distributed?  What was the impact? Did the media coverage or program result in additional coverage throughout the year? A personal photo and a link to actual article or video clip should also be submitted.
Outstanding Legislative Leadership An elected official at any governmental level whose actions in office have significantly contributed to recycling and reducing waste in Pennsylvania during the past year (January 1 – December 31, 2017). What did this individual accomplish that distinguishes them? A personal photo and a link to any articles or video clip would be helpful.
Outstanding Outreach – Educational Institution An educational institution (college, university, public/private school, school district, PTA, etc.) that maximizes their educational and outreach opportunities to influence recycling and waste reduction.  Photos, articles, educational examples would be helpful.
Outstanding Outreach –Municipality (City, County, or State) or Nonprofit A municipal entity (city, county or state government) or nonprofit organization that influences recycling and waste reduction in tangible methods through creative outreach and educational campaigns.
Outstanding Business Recycling/Diversion Program A company or organization whose work and/or innovation has furthered and expanded recycling in Pennsylvania. The business’ primary function can be recycling, organics and electronics programs.
Outstanding Government or Nonprofit Recycling /Diversion Program A public agency or nonprofit organization that leads by example, creating programs that effectively increase recycling and waste diversion. Organics and electronics programs would qualify.

Special or Unique Achievement

This encompasses a broad spectrum of areas and includes such person(s) or entities who have created an enduring legacy through their inspirational leadership, exceptional volunteerism, innovative practices, public/private partnerships, core values, and significant contributions. Include what this individual or entity did that distinguishes them and why it was above and beyond the normal scope of their duties. Include any supporting documentation or pictures that would demonstrate the special or unique aspects of the achievement.

  • Narrative

In 1,000 words or less please describe the project/program/person apply or being nominated for consideration. The narrative needs to include how the project/program/person impacted the recycling or organics industry, sustainability, etc. within the State of Pennsylvania.  Consider the following:

  • What is useful, unique, or noteworthy about this effort?
  • What progress has been made and how was success demonstrated? 
  • Describe the outreach and/or educational efforts. Provide examples if possible.
  • Describe the program’s longevity, date started, target audience, users, etc.
  • Include the documented participation and recovery rates, quantity and types (in tons, volumes or percentages) of recycled materials reused, waste reduced or prevented, materials or toxins reduced.
  • Describe any key lessons learned to share with others.  Successes and failures are both valuable to learn from!
  • Describe the aspects of originality, strategies or risks taken to overcome meeting the needs of your audience, addressing challenges and barriers, or filling gaps, including procurement efforts to “close the loop” if applicable.
  • Describe the level of commitment from the individual or company, or the overall environmental benefit the individual or company has accomplished.
